History

Ken St Amand, a school teacher at Corpus Christi School, formed Hurons Gymnastic Club Inc. in 1976. Sponsored financially by the Simcoe County Board of Education, the club had a membership of approximately 20 recreational gymnasts. Ken was the operator and Head Coach.

The legal formation of the Penetang Midland Hurons Gymnastic Club and the election of the first Board of Directors took place in 1979. In December of the same year the Hurons became a full member of the Ontario Gymnastics Federation, operating as a Competitive and Recreational Artistic Gymnastics club. Membership was 80 athletes.

In October 1984, the Huron’s incorporated as a “not for profit” under the Corporations Act. The Huron’s operated out of various schools over the years providing quality gymnastics to over 250 gymnasts per season. The club has had some very impressive and talented gymnasts, both competitive and recreational.

One of the Club’s most talented gymnasts was Loris Ferraro, a National Level gymnast who ranked #1 in 1984. Loris would have been in the 1988 Seoul Olympics if not for circumstances and lack of a proper gymnasium to train in. Loris is an inductee at the Midland Sports Hall Of Fame.

Friday March 3rd 1995 was the grand opening of the Hurons Gymnastic Club’s new facility. Many years of fundraising, hard work for the 93/94/95 Board of Directors and the help of the Provincial (*condensed version of Ed Garraway’s 1997 History of the Hurons)
